The discussion of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin’s initiative to send peacekeepers to the Donbass is buzzing the second day. The Heads of the DPR and the LPR expressed their agreement to discuss this proposal. Why did the topic acquire such a turn, if only recently did the Republic express absolute disagreement with the deployment of UN peacekeepers on their territory?
It’s all about nuances, and very significant. We will continue objecting the presence on our territory of any armed peacekeeping missions as previously. But it’s quite another matter on the demarcation line, where Ukraine often violates the ceasefire. Let them be there, and only there they will guard the OSCE staff. This is the first essential condition.
The second condition in the discussion of this issue is that the expediency of deploying peacekeepers will become possible only after the conditions of the first paragraph of the Minsk agreements have been fulfilled – the complete withdrawal of heavy equipment and the disengagement of the forces and facilities of the parties. As you know, this point has not been fulfilled by the Ukrainian party for three years already. I would like to see how it will be forced to do it.
And the very important requirement concerning the discussion of the conditions for the introduction of UN peacekeepers only when establishing direct contact with the representatives of the DPR and the LPR is quite clear.
Ukraine has long insisted on the introduction of a peacekeeping mission to the entire territory of the Donbass, including the DPR and the LPR, and was preparing to intensify this process in the near future. This is exactly the question that was posed to the Russian president during a press conference at the BRICS summit. The importance of the problem forced Vladimir Putin not only to promulgate his proposal, but also to instruct the Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, present there, to make a relevant resolution to the UN Security Council.
The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, has already stated that Russia is starting consultations in the UN Security Council on a draft resolution on the introduction of a peacekeeping contingent into the Donbass.
In the near future we will witness how once again the Russian Federation will defend the interests of the inhabitants of our region on the international platform, in this case the UN.
