People’s Council agrees on execution plan for Road Safety Week

On May 6, an extended meeting of the People’s Council Committee for Transport and Communications was held, dedicated to the opening of the Road Safety Week and discussion of the draft plan for holding relevant events in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The event was attended by the representative of the DPR Head in the People’s Council, Oleg Vanin, Deputy Transport Minister, Rostislav Markelov, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Irina Simonova, representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters, Donetsk City Council, the Office of the State Automobile Inspectorate of the DPR MIA, the Donetsk Transport Academy and the Automobile Transport Federation.

In his opening speech, Committee Chairman Sergey Rozhkov noted that the Global Road Safety Week was initiated by the UN General Assembly and the World Health Organization in 2005. This event is held annually, and its main goal is to raise public awareness in the field of safe behaviour on the road and to stimulate actions to reduce the injury risk.

“The problem of road safety is relevant in every civilized country. The Donetsk People’s Republic also joins the global plan to carry out activities aimed at reducing the number of dead and wounded people on our roads.

The level of road safety directly affects not only sustainability of socio-economic development, but also the work of the entire transport sector in the state. Road traffic injuries are one of the main problems. The increase in the number of vehicles should not be a justification for the growth of accidents and their tragic consequences. On the contrary, we must do everything possible to reduce their number, since in the absence of appropriate measures, this problem will only develop. I believe we can overcome the existing crisis in road safety only through intersectoral cooperation and partnership, with the involvement of civil society,” said Sergey Rozhkov.

In turn, the rector of the Donetsk Transport Academy Irina Englesi presented for discussion a draft plan of events to be held within the framework of the Road Safety Week in the DPR.

“The plan includes more than a dozen different events, from demonstration of video on road safety to children’s competitions, tournaments, various actions and preventive raids. Lessons are also planned in general education institutions and informing passengers at bus depots and bus stations, special briefings with drivers,” said Irina Englesi.

During a heated discussion, the meeting participants discussed the most important activities, as well as existing problems and some contentious issues. At the end of the meeting, it was decided to approve the plan for the Road Safety Week in the Donetsk People’s Republic. According to Sergey Rozhkov, one of the first events to be held in the framework of the Road Safety Week will be the 1st stage of the DPR Cup for carting “Life is more expensive than speed!”
