A formal handover of human remains as well as airplane wreck, which had been found at the MH-17 crash site and presumably belonged to passengers and flight crew members, who lost their lives in this tragic crash, to the representatives of Holland K. Walk and R. Daalman took place under the facilitation of the ESCE SMM.
The Donetsk People’s Republic has consistently demonstrated its openness and interest in its objective results throughout the investigation into the crash of the Malaysian Boeing. Today’s event is a further confirmation of our support and full cooperation with the investigation.
Against this background, it should be noted that, in February, the Minister of Security and Justice of the Netherlands, Stephanus Blok, in his letter to the Dutch parliamentarians, announced plans by the Ukrainian side to resume in spring the search for the remains of victims at the crash site. It never happened. Asserting concerns over the investigation results, the Ukrainian authorities did not take any steps in this direction.
Given the importance of not only the legal but also moral aspects associated with the return of the remains of deceased passengers and crew members to their relatives, we had sought the cooperation of the Office of the Attorney-General of the Netherlands, as well as representatives OSCE and UN special monitoring missions on human rights and achieved some results.
I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to a journalist Patrick Lancaster for his active citizenship, which made it possible to return the victims’ remains to their relatives.
We hope that the international investigation, despite the political pressure exerted, will show impartiality and take a principled position in the assessment of the catastrophe, the establishment of the true causes and the persons responsible for the tragedy, to which completely innocent people were subjected.
