#Commentary of Valery Skorokhodov on how EU countries start to apply legislative warnings to Ukraine
The government of Hungary has adopted a memorandum on the protection of Transcarpathian Hungarians, which, as a matter of fact, allows interfering in the internal affairs of Ukraine in case of danger to their compatriots.
Pursuing an aggressive policy towards Russians, the political establishment of Ukraine affects the representatives of other nationalities. It is now time to pay for radical political solutions.
For instance, a conflict between Ukraine and Hungary, which is a European country and NATO member, is developing and gathering momentum. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Péter Szijjártó stated in April this year that “Ukraine had struck at the rights of national minorities, which had become a cause for the aggravation of relations between two states. The law on education, which substantially limited the possibility of all national minorities to study in their own language, was the first strike at the rights of Hungarians, who resided in the territory of Ukraine. According to the Minister, Ukraine has not entered into negotiations with the Hungarian minority of Transcarpathia yet, despite international pressure.
Szijjártó called the declaration of Kivalov-Kolisnichenko language law unconstitutional the second strike. And lastly, the Hungarian Minister called the call of President Poroshenko to adopt a law on the punishment of dual citizenship the third strike. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary called this move a threat to national security.
In this regard, Péter Szijjártó stated that Hungary would block Ukraine’s attempts to join NATO. The memorandum on the protection of Transcarpathian Hungarians was adopted at the first meeting of the new Government of Hungary on May 18, 2018. The document was sent to the prime ministers of all member countries of NATO, as well as to the NATO Secretary General. The Hungarian government invited the member of NATO to take into account the concerns of national minorities in Ukraine, which are connected with the Ukrainian laws. It is quite symbolic that the new Government of Hungary commences functioning with this document. Hungary is getting ready to protect the rights of the Hungarians, who reside in the territory of Ukraine, many of whom have Hungarian passports.
The Bandera ideology, which the Kiev power advocates, causes problems to Poland that sees Ukraine in a positive light. The Senate of Poland passed a law on criminal responsibility for propaganda of Ukrainian nationalist ideology and on denial of these crimes. The punishment will be imposed on those who publicly deny, in disregard of facts, crimes listed in it. The statements of many Ukrainian political experts, who take radically nationalist side, may fall within the scope of the law.
Of course, pragmatism takes the first place in the policy of European countries and Kiev has no need to worry about harsh measures taken by Europe while the US patronizes Ukraine and use its nationalism as a weapon against Russia. However, in the event that the US loses interest in Ukraine, its European neighbours are getting ready for firm and resolute action under the pretext of defending national minorities.
