The UN published the 20th report on the condition of human rights in Ukraine, which covers the period from August to November 2017. The report deals with the situation throughout Ukraine, it raises issues of violation of freedom of speech, judicial arbitrariness and persecution of Ukrainian judges, impunity of the organizers of the fire in the House of Trade Unions on May 2, 2014, in Odessa, and much more.
The UN report contains records of shocking stories describing torture, sexual violence and bullying of civilians by the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) and nationalist battalions. But apart from private stories, the United Nations also distinguishes systemic violations of human rights by Ukraine. Again, violations of the rights of national minorities by the law “On Education” are mentioned. There is a demand for recognition of DPR documents on the birth and death in Ukraine. The presence of AFU heavy weapons near the contact line is stressed, permanent bombardments by the AFU of civil infrastructure facilities, in particular the Donetsk filtering station, are confirmed.
The UN calls for “…immediate observance of the ceasefire regime and the fulfillment of all other commitments provided for by the Minsk agreements, including the withdrawal of heavy weapons and the disengagement of forces and facilities.”
The report provides comparative data on those who died from shelling on the territory of Ukraine and on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. It turns out that our fellow citizens died ten times more than citizens of Ukraine. These figures clearly show who is in compliance with the Minsk accords, and who is not, who is the criminal, and who is defending.
For the Ukrainian press, the UN report was a shock. Most of the top media outlets are silent, distracting the audience by a trial of the culprit of a road accident in Kharkov. The rest of them dryly, with caution, write about cases of sexual violence by the AFU, talk about pressure on judges from Poroshenko and other paragraphs of the report, which provide information on human rights violations by Ukraine. For the first time, the UN said about these facts and spoke in a report criticizing not the DPR, but primarily Ukraine, starting to understand who is the real culprit in the situation in the Donbas.
It is especially important that the report not only examines fresh crimes of the Ukrainian authorities, but also raises the topic of the tragedy on May 2 in Odessa, raises questions about who killed people on the “Maidan”, cited cases of judicial arbitrariness and illegal detention of journalists.
On the one hand, all this indicates the success of the activities of the DPR on the international arena. For the first time the United Nations heard the voice of the Donbass and its inhabitants. And on the other – this is evidence that Poroshenko became a political bankrupt after he demonstrated his incompetence.
Let’s hope that this report of an influential international organization will not be hushed up in the world media, as in the Ukrainian media, and this information will not only be heard, but will become an essential prerequisite for peace in our land.
