“Minsk-2” is the only international platform, where People’s Republics are present and where we can be heard. This was stated by the Chairman of the DPR People’s Council Denis Pushilin in an interview, dedicated to the third anniversary of the signing of the Package of Measures for the implementation of the Minsk Agreements by the leaders of the “Normandy Four”, to the correspondent of the official website of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
ʺUkraine was in very complex circumstances in February 2015: the AFU ended up in another pocket and there was a need to sign agreements that could stop or change the situation. It is no secret that Ukraine was ready to sign anything at that time in order not to lose face and not to suffer a complete military defeat. We agreed to this step, because, during the conflict, we learned to appreciate human life and understood that politics were politics, but if there was a possibility to save life, then this chance had to be used.
I cannot call the Minsk arrangements perfect. This document was prepared to constitute a compromise and it contained provisions that could lead to a settlement of the conflict. Then it was a chance to emerge from the situation in a civilized way, because Donbass was a stage for geopolitical battles at that time. We did not hope that Ukraine would implement the Minsk agreements, but hoped that it would reduce the intensity of hostilities. We cannot say that they stopped shooting completely, but compared to what it used to be before the signing, cases of shelling decreased significantly. Besides, after the signing of “Minsk-2”, we had a political platform to solve our issue. Currently, the Minsk agreements should be treated as follows: it is the only international platform where People’s Republic are present, where we can be heard,ʺ Denis Pushilin said.
