Denis Pushilin: No UN contingent in Donbass without my fellow countrymen’s decision

Without the consent of the residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, no UN contingent can be deployed to the Donbass. This was stated in an exclusive interview to the Federal News Agency by the Chairman of the DPR People’s Council, the Permanent Representative of the DPR at the talks of the Contact Group in Minsk, Denis Pushilin.

“The official Kiev can manipulate vox populi in public, manipulating public opinion in any way, denying DPR and LPR residents their rights to decide whether there will be peacekeeping missions on their land and in what format, but when it comes to specifics, international norms will be applied. And according to them such operations are conducted with the obligatory voluntary consent of the parties to the conflict. This is a prerequisite. This is in the first place.

And secondly, the Minsk agreements, approved by the UN Security Council resolution, clearly indicate the parties to the conflict in the Donbass,” the DPR envoy said.

In his opinion, “as a result of this simple logical chain the conclusion suggests itself: without the decision of my fellow countrymen, no one will deploy anything to the territory of our Republics.”

We recall that on the eve, on April 1, 2018, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko announced that he, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, had agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the introduction of UN peacekeepers in the Donbass. At that, the DPR and LPR in this application were not mentioned.

In turn, Russian senator Alexey Pushkov, who heads the Council on Information Policy of the Council of Federation, commenting on Poroshenko’s words on his Twitter account, noted that Poroshenko should discuss this topic exclusively with Donetsk and Lugansk.

“Poroshenko should discuss the deployment of peacekeepers not with Merkel or Volker, but with Donetsk and Lugansk. Without their consent, there will not be any peacekeepers there,” Alexey Pushkov said.
