Gorlovka hosts series of activities dedicated to 240th anniversary of city founding
On September 1, in the assembly hall of the cultural and commercial sports centre of Gorlovka, a solemn meeting dedicated to the 240th anniversary of the city founding was held. The event was attended by the DPR Head, Denis Pushilin, the Chairman of the People’s Council, Vladimir Bidyovka, deputies of the People’s Council, representatives of ministries and departments.
In a welcoming speech, Denis Pushilin thanked the locals for their devotion to the ideals of the Republic and wished their city continued prosperity.
“Dear Gorlovka residents! Let me sincerely congratulate you on the 240th anniversary of the founding of Gorlovka. The term is considerable, but, of course, now we are talking about what has happened over the past five years. And for Gorlovka, they were really difficult. Gorlovka lived, developed and continues to develop in no matter what. Despite aggression, in spite of the blockades, in spite of the daily shelling that we’ve heard even today.
Nevertheless, Gorlovka still exists, and Gorlovka has big plans! I am very glad that both residents of Gorlovka and the administration put development, prosperity at the forefront, as with the solution to the problems that we have in abundance today, and everyone knows about them. Starting with the roads and Stirol company, which was forced to stand idle, ending with security on the contact line, on the outskirts of Gorlovka. These are all the problems that we have to deal with. Let’s do it! It cannot be any other way.
For the feats of arms of Gorlovka residents, the defenders of Gorlovka, this city was awarded the title of the city of military glory. And it is absolutely deserved.
I am optimistic about the future of both Gorlovka and the Donetsk People’s Republic, because we want to develop, we think about future generations, we do not stop in spite of any difficulties,” Denis Pushilin said.
Parliament Speaker Vladimir Bidyovka joined the congratulations from the Head of State.
“Dear fellow countrymen, happy holiday, happy City Say of your wonderful city!
For almost two and a half centuries, Gorlovka has been a city of labour, a city of courage, a city of special, characteristic of Donbass, endurance. During the Great Patriotic War, Gorlovka was occupied by the Nazis, but never surrendered. Thanks to the dedication of the inhabitants, the city became one of the centres of the secretive struggle against the invaders and was liberated on September 5, 1943.
Alas, in 2014 the war came here again, and brought a lot of grief to our land. And Gorlovka residents once again, following the precepts of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers, showed their stamina and courage in the face of the enemy.
I am outraged that today Ukraine continues to kill civilians. But I sincerely admire your courage, industriousness and unwavering faith in the ideals of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Today, these qualities allow Gorlovka to stand at the forefront and not bend under the onslaught of the enemy.
I wish you, more than anything, the long-awaited peace that our common victory will bring. I wish you happiness and strong health!” the Chairman of the People’s Council said.
During the official part, distinguished residents of Gorlovka were awarded with letters of gratitude of the DPR Head and letters of appreciation of the Chairman of the People’s Council.
We shall recall that during the Second World War Gorlovka survived two years of occupation. The city was captured by the Nazis on November 29, 1941, and liberated on September 5, 1943. The occupied city did not stop the resistance. Residents of Gorlovka became part of two guerrilla detachments. Five secretive groups worked directly in the city. In the days of occupation, Gorlovka was the centre of secretive resistance throughout the region. Over the 4 years of the war, 22 townspeople were awarded the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, eight people became full holders of the Order of Glory.
By Decree of the Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic No. 221 dated 22.08.2017, the city was awarded the title “City of Military Glory.”
