#Official Commentary of Alla Barkhatnova on Ukraine’s coquetry with China

Almost three years have passed from the moment when Ukraine had been overwhelmed with the so-called “revolution of dignity”. The changes, as promised, surely have occurred, but not in the sense which the protesters on the “Maidan” had. Europe, visa-free regime, freedom and prosperity? No. War, devastation, economic decline, loss of territories – that are sad, but true answers to the question “What did the Maidan stand for?”

Petro Poroshenko, who came to power as a result of a coup d’etat, who so selflessly promised to turn Ukraine into a European state, in fact only managed to enter the country in a state of turmoil, to unleash a fratricidal war and gain fabulous loans. Having secured the image of the president-beggar, he is trying to find allies among other states, and asks for assistance once again. Thus, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, held from 17 to 20 of January, a meeting of the President of Ukraine and President Xi Jinping took place, followed by Petro Poroshenko, “expressing hope that China will contribute to the peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbass.”

The fact that the Ukrainian President, who has made a kind of trend from the process of history’s negation (i.e.”mecommunization”), addressed to the leader of the Communist Party, is noteworthy! So much time, effort and finance has been spent on erasing from the pages of history so much “hated” Soviet era, directly related to the notion of communism, so many facts were reinterpreted, and it is necessary to ask for assistance from those who are the bearers and custodians of the values that are so are so fiercely destroyed in Ukraine at the present time. As always caught in his own judgments Poroshenko continues to commit unpredictable actions.

In fact, now the unfortunate president is trying by all means and ways to prove their ability, but without any support from the outside it is impossible in principle. After Donald Trump’s winning the election in the United States, Ukrainian ‘elite’ realized that they will not get the same support, which means that they need new patrons. In my opinion, an attempt to make friends with Xi Jinping shows the desperation of the ruling Ukrainian elite. No one believes the promises of the imminent visa-free regime, the economy has long slipped into the abyss, and hryvnia’s retention is becoming increasingly complex. The fourth tranche of the IMF, which Poroshenko expects soon, will not help stop the decline of the economy for sure, but the President will have the possibility to tighten the process, giving the appearance of positive change.

Only one thing is striking in this deplorable situation: the cynicism with which Poroshenko makes decisions. It is obvious that life and welfare of the Ukrainian people is no longer on the agenda. All that the current government can offer its citizens is once again ‘tighten their belts’ and promise that the bright future is almost here.

The unfortunate Ukrainian government continues destroying the country. Moreover, if they do not get promised bonuses, the Kiev authorities begin to speculate on the arrangements with the West, the public opinion of people, exposing themselves as fighters for justice who paid a huge price. For example, Poroshenko at the meeting with the ambassadors accredited in Ukraine, speaking about the necessity of obtaining a visa-free regime, stated the following: “Further delay is blatantly unfair, because the Ukrainians have paid a high price. And it is dangerous, because further delay, which has no grounds, would undermine the faith of Ukrainians in Europe, which, in fact, Russia wants.”

From the side it looks like blackmailing, although it is unlikely these threats affect the decision of Europeans, whether let these guys into the house or not.
