#Official Commentary of Ekaterina Martyanova on Obama’s surprise about large terrorist operations in Middle East
America is a country of surprises, which was especially noticeable this autumn. Firstly, Donald Trump surprised both the United States and the entire world with his unexpected victory in the presidential elections. Many people still cannot believe that such an event can occur in a country, which brings democracy all over the world.
But now, it is Barack Obama’s turn to be surprised. Recent statements by the US President on some mistakes of the US, which led to the emergence of ISIS and that it was a big surprise for him, suggest: Did not Barack Obama notice the emergence of the most powerful terrorist organization in the world during eight years of his presidency and the whole period of the US military intervention in the Middle East?
But before asking questions to Barack Obama, it is worth remembering that less than a year after the beginning of his first term, in October 2009, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his ‘extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples’. Time has shown that the prize, which the Nobel Committee awarded to the president, was undeserved. Barack Obama has shown the world population that his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples are quite questionable and then they just turned to dust. Recent actions of the US in the Middle East and Ukraine are not in conformity with the statements of American leaders on combating terrorism, and the role of America as a missionary of democracy becomes a farce.
ʺJustice has been done,ʺ Obama said, when the leader of the “Al Qaeda” terrorist group Osama bin Laden was killed. Does the US leader want to answer for a new wave of chaos caused by the operation in the Middle East? To answer for the emergence of new and more powerful terrorist alliances that resulted in a wave of protests and coups called the “Arab spring” subsequently.
But no, the 44th US President was grimly determined to be remembered as a president-peacemaker. But before his resignation, Obama suddenly realized that the intervention in Lybia was his big mistake. Does the American ex-president want to tell the price of his mistake? How many Libyans were killed, how many people have become refugees and what responsibility does the United States lay on itself for the civil war unleashed in this country? ʺI don’t oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war,ʺ Obama said when he was a senator. Let the 44th US president answer: was the war in Libya dumb? What was the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for?
Statement of Obama that the United States applied the ‘best solutions’ in the fight against IS raises questions about what purposes does the United States pursue in the Middle East? Were the ‘best solutions’ to supply weapons to terrorists by mistake? Did air strikes on medical institutions or government troops get on the list of their ‘best solutions’?
Obama’s statements sound even more ridiculous when two Russian medics were killed in Syria after shelling of the Russian Defence Ministry’s field hospital by one of the groups of militants of ‘moderate opposition’, which is actively supported by the United States. For some reason, this fact was not condemned by any human rights organizations. The US State Department expressed sluggish regrets and condemned ‘any act of terrorism’. America might as well say that smoking and alcohol abuse increase the risk of cancer. Moreover, one of the recent decisions of Obama to lift restrictions on the supply of weapons to allies of the US, in other words, to the ‘moderate opposition’s’ militants, who are shelling Syrian hospitals and schools.
Obama said that his ‘radar’ had no information that ISIS had increased its forces several times in recent years. Maybe his ‘radar’ was set to the wrong frequency? But Obama’s radar is constantly registering every action of the government forces and Russian aircraft in Syria, which are aimed at the elimination of terrorism. At the same time, Syria as well as Russia are being criticized and facing demands to be “condemned and punished!”. Trying to accuse the Syrian army and Russia, they resort to outright lies and staged videos, throwing tantrums and naming the alleged victims of Russian air strikes. In this case, you can associate yourself with the words of people, who are fighting terrorism in Syria, addressed to the American ex-president: ʺIf you cannot help, then just step aside and do not bother usʺ.
Barack Obama has always said that the US armed forces are the most powerful on the planet. In this case, intelligence service is the Achilles’ heel of the US Army. Did not the former president of America receive any information that Islamists had been increasing their forces and merging into powerful groups in the Middle East? Was Barack Obama in the dark all this time? Did not his subordinates report on supplies of weapons to militants with the help of NATO? And the variety of supply routes is astounding as well as the number of countries involved! Militants get weapons and food from the air, when the US Air Force drops them on the enemy territory ‘by chance or due to bad weather’. Weapons are delivered by sea and through the headquarters located in the territories of allies, for example, through Saudi Arabia.
Barack Obama will have to devolve power on the new president of America – Donald Trump in January. That is why, I would like to support the appeal of the chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Alexey Pushkov, who offered Barack Obama to do at least one deed, to give his Nobel Peace Prize to Libyan and Syrian children affected by devastating democratic mission of the US.
