Oleg Onopko: Instead of specific proposals for conflict’s peaceful settlement, Kiev speculates on the language issue
Andrey Bogdan’s statement indicates that the Office of the President of Ukraine is still not engaged in public policy. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by DPR People’s Council deputy Oleg Onopko.
The administration virtually continues to work as the electoral headquarters of Vladimir Zelensky’s “Servant of the People” party, the only things that’s different is their activities are now financed from the state budget. Instead of starting to develop specific proposals for the peaceful settlement of the conflict and take measures for a ceasefire, Andrey Bogdan is trying to attract Russian-speaking voters, speculating on the language issue. This already happened in 2004 and in 2014, and everyone knows what this led to – people took up arms to defend their rights to their native language, culture and identity.
The new Ukrainian government makes old mistakes and thus tries to influence the inhabitants of the south-east of Ukraine. It is this group of the population, and not the people of the Donbass, that is the targeted audience of the statement by the head of the Office of Ukraine.
In the Donbass – In the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics – the status of the Russian language is regulated by both our Constitutions and the Set of Measures for the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which directly secures our “right to language self-determination”.
