On August 31, a mourning rally dedicated to the anniversary of the death of the first Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic took place in the culture and leisure park of the city of Donetsk. During the event, a bust of the DPR Hero, Alexander Zakharchenko, was installed on the Alley of Heroes.

President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov, Head of the Lugansk People’s Republic Leonid Pasechnik, First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Abkhazia Colonel General Beslan Tsvizhba, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on the Rules and Organization of Parliamentary Activities, Chairman of the Committee for Public Support for Residents of the South-East of Ukraine Sergey Mamedov, parliamentary leader of the Just Russia Faction in State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the VII convocation Sergey Mironov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs Viktor Vodolatsky, deputies of the State Duma Andrey Kozenko and Kazbek Taysaev came to commemorate the first DPR Head.
The rally participants honored the memory of the first Head of State with a minute of silence, and also laid flowers on the bust of the DPR Hero Alexander Zakharchenko.
Addressing the gathered, Denis Pushilin noted the role played by the first Head of the DPR in the formation of the Republic.
“Today, together with friends and associates from fraternal countries, we open the bust of the Hero of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko. He was the true son of Donbass! From the first days of resistance, he was among the leaders and then, in the most difficult moments, he headed the Republic, he took on a huge burden. And, as we see, he pulled it off.
Alexander Vladimirovich went down in history as a man who fought for freedom, independence, and well-being of citizens of the Donetsk People’s Republic. He was a real father for officers and soldiers; people followed him, firmly believing in what they were doing.
That faith that he had instilled is still alive today. This obliges us to keep up with all his undertakings, to realize his goals, ideas, and tasks. And this is exactly what we are going to do – it can be seen in all our actions. That is why it is important for us to perpetuate all that he did, and all his merits.
It is very gratifying that the Donbass natives do not forget their land, they root for it with their hearts and souls. I am talking about a patron who came up with the initiative to create a bust. It allows us to convey to the descendants the face of Alexander Vladimirovich and feel the moments that we experienced and are experiencing with you now.
The name of Alexander Vladimirovich is inscribed in golden letters in the history of Donbass,” the Head of the Republic said.
In a comment to the press service of the People’s Council, Vladimir Bidyovka spoke about the place that Alexander Zakharchenko occupied in the hearts of ordinary people.
“Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko forever entered the history of Donbass, its struggle for independence, truth, and justice. He courageously defended the interests of the inhabitants of our region both on the battlefields and in the international arena. The first Head of the DPR sincerely loved his Homeland, thereby gaining well-deserved recognition both among the military and civilians. The Hero of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko, will forever remain in the hearts of our fellow countrymen,” the Speaker of Parliament said.
We shall recall that the first Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Alexander Zakharchenko, was tragically killed on August 31, 2018 as a result of a terrorist act in the centre of Donetsk. The farewell ceremony with the Head of State took place on September 2 at the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A. B. Solovyanenko.
Alexander Zakharchenko was buried with military honours in the city cemetery “Donetsk Sea”.
