Republic’s officials take part in rally in memory of Hero of DPR Oleg Mamiyev
On May 21, in the capital’s Park of Culture and Rest named after the Lenin Komsomol, a rally was held dedicated to the opening of a portrait sculpture of Hero of the Donetsk People’s Republic Oleg Mamiyev and the foundation of the Alley of Heroes memorial complex.
The event was attended by Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushilin, President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov, Chairman of the DPR People’s Council Vladimir Bidyovka, deputy of the Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia Zelimkhan Vatayev, Hero of Donetsk People’s Republic Akhra Avidzba, commander of the Pyatnashka battalion Andrey Kuzin, as well as Oleg Mamiyev’s wife and son.
Addressing the rally participants, Head of the Republic Denis Pushilin emphasized that perpetuating the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for peace and freedom is the immediate duty of the state.
“Friends! It’s been a year without Oleg Mamiyev with us – a Man with a capital “M”, a real Hero of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Remembering what a man, comrade, and military officer Oleg Mamiyev was, it is difficult to find someone who could say something bad about him.
Today we are opening the portrait sculpture of Oleg Mamiyev, and this is the beginning of the Alley of Heroes. For the sake of the future, the state must perpetuate the memory of our heroes. This is a small fraction of what we can do,” Denis Pushilin said.
In turn, the President of the Republic of South Ossetia, Anatoly Bibilov, thanked the DPR leadership for their reverent attitude to the memory of the fallen.
“Brothers and sisters! I am very grateful that in the Donbass, in the Donetsk People’s Republic, the memory of our countryman, a man who devoted the last years of his life to the struggle for justice, the struggle for life, for his principles, is perpetuated,” Anatoly Bibilov noted.
The Chairman of the DPR People’s Council, Vladimir Bidyovka, emphasized that Mamay will forever go down in the history of the Republic as its courageous and selfless defender.
“A year ago, the son of the Ossetian people and the defender of the Donbass people perished. From the first days of our Republic’s founding, Oleg Mamiyev began to defend the right of the Donbass people to live freely. He was an example of heroism, courage and patriotism, not only for the Donbass and the people of South Ossetia, but also for the whole world. His death was not in vain – he became part of the history of the Donbass, world history, forever. Glory to the Hero and lest we forget him,” the Speaker of Parliament said.
We shall recall that in May 2014, Oleg Mamiyev (callsign Mamay) volunteered to defend the Donetsk People’s Republic. He was one of the founders of the Union of Donbass Volunteers and commander of the special-purpose regiment “Pyatnashka”. For fighters and officers of his unit, Mamay was a strict but fair commander, and for the enemy – an irreconcilable opponent.
