Valery Skorokhodov: Provocation with violation of Russian Federation’s border is one of links in Poroshenko’s plan to preserve power in his hands

Kiev’s provocation in the region of the Kerch Strait and the intention to impose martial law is an attempt of the President of Ukraine Pyotr Poroshenko to retain power by cancelling the upcoming elections in March 2019, deputy of the DPR People’s Council Valery Skorokhodov said.

The FSB of Russia previously stated that the ships of the Ukrainian Navy Berdyansk, Nikopol and Yany Kapu had violated the Russian border, had not reacted to the legal requirements of the escorting ships and boats of the FSB border service and the Black Sea Fleet of Russia to immediately stop and cease dangerous manoeuvring, after which they had been detained. As previously reported by the Defense Ministry of Ukraine, the order of the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine brought the armed forces into full alert on the basis of the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on the introduction of the legal regime of martial law. The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine decided to impose martial law in the country for 60 days. The decision is still to be approved by the Verkhovna Rada, which will meet in an extraordinary meeting to consider this issue on Monday at 17.00 Moscow time.

“Russia could not inflict any serious damage to Ukraine’s naval ships militarily. Nevertheless, they were ordered to enter the Russian water area, about which the detained Ukrainian sailors will tell soon. Considering that the command of the Ukrainian ships did not respond to the warnings of the Russian border guards, it can be concluded that it acted according to a pre-planned scenario.

Further, the ships of the Ukrainian Navy were quite predictably detained, and Poroshenko assembled the NSDCU, after which he declared that the Verkhovna Rada was recommended to consider the issue of martial law.

A gigantic propaganda machine, which Poroshenko has at his disposal, was not able to brainwash Ukrainians in terms of showing sympathy for the president. It is about three months before the election, Poroshenko’s rating is less than 10%, and he decided to include such a mechanism as “martial law” in the process of preserving the power. According to article 19 of the law of Ukraine “On the Legal Regime of Martial Law”, elections of the president and deputies of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada are prohibited. The rights and freedoms of citizens are significantly limited, the power structures are endowed with the right to seize property, labour conscription is applied, censorship is introduced and much more. Yes, this is just a paradise for Poroshenko; more than that, his regime will be selective with applying martial law, using his favourite double standards. No one will declare war on Russia, trade will continue, banks will interact,” Valery Skorokhodov noted.

He added that Kiev may try to destabilize the situation on the contact line in the Donbass after the provocation in the Kerch Strait area.

“It is possible that the Ukrainian military command, after failing to manifest their water adventures, will try to recoup in the Donbass by destabilizing the situation on the contact line,” the parliamentarian suggested.
