Veterans of Afghanistan hostilities honoured in Republic’s capital

On February 15, in Donetsk, the Lenin Komsomol Park of Culture and Leisure hosted a rally dedicated to the 31st anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

The Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushilin, the President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov, the Chairman of the People’s Council Vladimir Bidyovka, the deputy of the People’s Council, the chairman of the non-governmental organization “Union of Afghanistan Veterans of the Donetsk People’s Republic” Vladimir Savyolov, the head of Donetsk City Hall Alexey Kulemzin attended the event.

Besides them, the rally was attended by DPR People’s Council deputies, representatives of republican ministries and departments, war veterans of Afghanistan hostilities, members of the community and city residents.

The DPR Head Denis Pushilin addressed the meeting attendees.

“Dear friends! On February 15, we traditionally gather and call to memory the Afghan war. This is not just a date for us, but also a tribute to those people who performed a feat during that war. And, of course, for us, the most active participation of the internationalist combatants is important in our own war now. It is no secret that then many joined the ranks. Nobody asked, persuaded, or convinced them. And many to this day remain in service.

It is an honour for me to present an award established already in the Donetsk People’s Republic. We must remember all the exploits of all wars,” the Head of the Republic said.

Denis Pushilin solemnly presented the medals “For fidelity to duty and service to the Homeland” to the participants in the hostilities in Afghanistan.

Addressing the Afghanistan veterans, Anatoly Bibilov noted the influence of their experience on the younger generation.

“It was probably Afghan warriors who played the most important role when it came to deciding my future, including the military,” the President of South Ossetia emphasized.

In his speech, Chairman of the DPR People’s Council Vladimir Bidyovka noted the importance of the mission of internationalist combatants in Afghanistan.

“The Afghan warriors were the first to embark on the path of international terrorism, which is so generously funded by the United States. They were the first who challenged this phenomenon, not sparing their lives, health; losing their friends. The participants in the Afghanistan hostilities not only performed their military duty, but also carried out a humanitarian mission. The Soviet contingent built schools and hospitals in Afghanistan. Sometimes Afghan children would get an opportunity to learn, which did not exist during a peaceful life.

This indicates the importance of your mission, how important your dedication with which you performed it was. Honour, courage, duty, friendship are the values which you carry through life. That is why you defended the Donetsk People’s Republic in 2014. Thank you so much for that!” the Speaker of the DPR Parliament said.

At the end of the event, its participants laid flowers at the monument to the fallen Afghan warriors.

We remind that 31 years ago, the last units of Soviet troops left Afghanistan. Over 15 thousand military personnel of the USSR were killed in hostilities fulfilling their international duty.

The memorable date was established by the Decree of the Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic of July 29, 2019. On this day, veterans of Afghanistan, members of the DPR People’s Militia, families and friends of those killed in the line of duty and the Republic’s officials traditionally gather at war memorials to honour the memory of internationalist combatants.

Events in memory of this event are held throughout the Donetsk People’s Republic.
